It happened the way it always happens. I was bored one day and decided to start a new television series. It was around the same time I had just finished the entire series of Misfits UK on Netflix and wrote the piece, “That Awkward Feeling After You’ve Finished Watching A TV Series.”
I needed something new to watch, but nothing seemed interesting enough. That was until I discovered Broad City. I was already watching the 11th season of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, so my comedy quota was already being reached, but I thought why not watch another comedy show.
So I started watching the first season of Broad City. It was only 10 episodes, so I thought this was going to be an easy binge. Then I found out season 2 was 10 episodes too, so I thought alright, this is doable. And this show turned out to be better than I anticipated. I’d eventually bing-watch the first two seasons in two weeks.
And I’ll even be honest and say that this show is now already one of my favourite comedy shows of all time. After just finishing the third season, I can confidently say this.
And the reason why l like this show so much starts with the intro song. Every single episode has a new weird, crazy animation that rings in each new episode. I high key look forward to this every episode. It’s that amazing.
But this isn’t why I love the show or why I now believe it’s one of my favourite comedy shows of all time. That reason solely rests because of the two lead actresses of the show, Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson.
These two actresses play Ilana and Abbi, using their own names for the show, as two people in their twenties who live in New York and go through some wild adventures each episode.
And it’s a simple concept, every episode is a new adventure, but the way they pull it off is hilarious. Literally every episode is just a new adventure, but it’s amazing. And it’s not just like, oh each episode is an adventure, nothing connects with each episode, because this show actually does have call backs.
There are moments when I got to season 2 where I was like oh, I remember this from season 1, which makes it amazing in this respect too, but it’s the whole adventure aspect I love. Like in season 2 when llana and Abbi head to a Bed Bath and Beyond store. Abbi acts like she doesn’t come here often, but she clearly does as the workers have a special bond with her to the dismay of Ilana.
And way back in season 1, Abbi got upset as her roommates boyfriend, Bevers after he threw out all of her Bed, Bath & Beyond coupons, so as someone who watches the show, you get these moments, these hilarious moments that connect. You get these call backs that make watching the show special.
And since I showed you how funny Abbi is, I have to show you how funny Ilana is. I tend to lean towards Illana as my favourite of the duo, but honestly Abbi has her hilarious moments, but back to which.
In the second season of Broad City, Ilana’s boss Todd finally pressures her to actually do work or she’ll be fired. In the first season, Ilana is lazy as one can be at her job at Deals! Deals! Deals! And her boss was a push over in season one, but in season two, he’s had enough, but of course, Ilana finds a way to get out of working and it’s hilarious. She ends up hiring Interns to do work for her and the interview process is jokes
Now as much as Broad City is about the friendship between Ilana and Abbi, there are reoccurring characters that make the show hilarious too. Jamie, Iliana’s roommate is hilarious, Lincoln, who’s played by comedian Hannibal Buress is hilarious and Trevor, who works with Abbi at Soulstice, a training facility is hilarious too. His character really starts to build in season 3, but I won’t ruin that for you. And Bevers who I mentioned earlier.
Essentially, there’s a lot packed in this show that will make you enjoy it. The theme song, the main characters, the adventures they go through, the other cast members that are on the show, it’s just a really great show.
Now just yesterday, the third season just concluded, so if I’ve made you think about watching this show, you have time to get all caught up before season 4 starts. Each season has 10 episodes, so If I got you intrigued, start watching the show.
