I’m black. Let’s just get that out of the way. This isn’t about race or colour. This is about being a creative. There’s nothing more amazing than seeing your thoughts turn into ideas, real, actual ideas. Seeing something you imagined, become an actual reality is an amazing feeling. This is what, I’d assume, Ian Fleming, creator of James Bond, must’ve felt when his writing of the character become a real life thing.
And that’s what this is about. Fleming created James Bond and he created him as a white character, played by white actors. Fleming, the author of the Bond novels, intended his hero to be white and male (like himself).
So, as good as, Idris Elba might be as the next Bond, I don’t want to see that. I don’t want to see any black actors play Bond. It doesn’t make any sense. It isn’t what the creator intended. If Fleming was alive today, he’d be against it. Nobody would ever want something they did changed after they died. That would be completely disrespectful to Fleming.
Its like when they re-did ‘We Are The World’ for Haiti. It made sense because it was made for a great cause, but ‘We Are The World’ is one of those untouchable songs. Jay Z even said, that it shouldn’t have been re-made. Jay-Z, told MTV that the original version was too sacred to him. “I think ‘We Are the World’ is like [Michael Jackson’s] ‘Thriller’ to me. I don’t ever wanna see it touched.” He added, “Some things are just untouchable. It was a valiant effort, but for me, it’s gonna be untouchable.”
James Bond being played by a black actor could be interesting, but its like Barack Obama having a biopic be played by a white actor. It doesn’t add up. Doesn’t make any sense. James bond is white and he’s always been white. The debate is worth having, but it’s not necessary. We have to respect the creator and keep Bond the way he was envisioned.
The new James Bond, Spectre is officially out worldwide.
